Elevated Deck and Timber Patio Cover in the Comal County Hill Country

On a wooded Comal County lot, this home needed a second-story outdoor room that felt like part of the house — not an afterthought. We built an elevated composite deck with a heavy-timber patio cover, cable railing, and a standing-seam metal roof matched to the existing home so the views stay open and the space works every day.

The challenge

Second-story outdoor living only works when structure, shade, and the house roof lines all agree. This Hill Country lot wanted covered dining, open lounge space, and a clean look that wouldn’t fight the trees or the existing metal roof.

What we built

An elevated composite deck paired with a heavy-timber patio cover. The deck is built the way we approach all our custom decks in San Antonio: grey composite decking and horizontal cable railing keep sightlines clear, and stairs drop back into the yard.

The cover follows the same thinking as our San Antonio patio covers. Thick timber posts and a decorative gable truss carry the pavilion, and standing-seam metal on the cover lines up with the house. Under it, a tongue-and-groove ceiling and fans turn the pavilion into a real outdoor room, with dining for a full table of guests and lounge seating nearer the house.

The result

Covered and open zones in one elevated outdoor living space, designed around how this family actually lives outside and around the Comal County views they built for. If you’re curious how a project like this goes from the first walk-through to the final board, here’s how our process works.
